PAUL R. CHRISTEN NATIONAL HIGH ADVENTURE BASE
High adventure at SBR adds a new dimension to the Scouting experience. High adventure is not just about adrenaline and the wow factor, it’s about digging deep within yourself, finding out what makes you tick and discovering how to push beyond what you think you can do.
The Paul R. Christen High Adventure Base offers seven programs within two program categories:
The Summit Experience program provides an introduction to all components of the SBR Adventure Zone
Trek Programs take advantage of one of the greatest natural resources in the eastern United States: The New River Gorge. Camp in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains either along the river or off the trail overlooking the gorge.
New River Trek
July 22-28, 2022
A week-long river adventure on West Virginia’s New River. Camping in the New River Gorge. Four days in inflatable kayaks in Class 1 to 3 rapids and one-day rafting in Class 3 to 5 rapids.
This is a 50-mile paddle trek on the New River. You will navigate the upper portion of the river in inflatable kayaks (one or two-man) called “duckies”. This portion of the river includes Class I to III rapids. The final whitewater day in the Lower Canyon is a rafting experience and includes Class III to V rapids. Crews camp along the river through the New River Gorge. A gear boat (raft) accompanies the group to transport gear and food.
We invite you to come enjoy a river voyage through the historically, culturally, ecologically significant New River Gorge. Paddle, camp, fish, and enjoy all that it has to offer to the next generation of rugged individuals willing to match their mettle against one of the world’s rugged natural wonders.
